Promises Made, Promises Kept
As Mayor of Delray Beach, Woodie has kept every campaign promise he made and then some…
Woodie promised to update the city software and automation.
- Updates to the city software is underway. Several companies responded to our bid and a winner was chosen for the replacement of all Public Safety software.
- 21st Century technology to help save lives. New software will allow our emergency responders to transmit a patient’s vital signs to the hospital while they are en route, saving precious minutes of diagnostic time in the ER. Also, the software will allow our Police Officers to have greater technological resources in their squad cars providing them the needed real-time information to protect our citizens.
- Will select new software to completely re-automate, or automate for the first time, all of the significant functions of management and staff located in City Hall and the Environmental Services/Engineering Division and Parks Offices. We will begin the process of moving to e-commerce, decision support and management support tools to facilitate the making of more informed and timely decisions with the ultimate goal of delivering excellent levels of service to our constituents at significantly lower cost.
- Ethics in local government – new software will also help register lobbyists online.
Woodie promised to reduce the city’s carbon footprint and cut overhead costs.
- Worked in partnership with Florida Atlantic University to create our baseline carbon footprint.
- Appointed a full-time Sustainability Officer.
- Changed to florescent lighting with motion detector switches in all city facilities.
- Revised the make-up of the entire city vehicle fleet, incorporating smaller fossil-fueled vehicles for non- pursuit police vehicles, hybrid vehicles for non-public-safety passenger vehicles and fully electric vehicles and bicycles for patrol of downtown and special events.
- Installed lower energy lighting in our sports parks.
- Instituted a new policy to chip all of the city’s landscape trimmings and reuse the resulting mulch.
- Revised trash collection policies in city offices resulting in the utilization of far fewer plastic trash can liners and reduction of thousands of pounds of trash per week.
- Utilizes excess ice produced each day to augment the air conditioning system for City Hall.
Woodie promised to shut down our Ocean Outfall.
- On April 1, 2009, the City of Delray Beach stopped dumping 16.5 million gallons into the ocean.
- Re-uses the wastewater we once pumped into the ocean to irrigate our public and private golf courses, barrier islands and Atlantic High School.
Woodie promised to spend time in the city, listening to the voters and to form an Association Presidents Coalition.
- He attends almost every public event in Delray Beach and even in our neighboring cities.
- Three Association Presidents Coalition meetings have been held and a forth is scheduled for September 2010.
Recent Accomplishments:
- Opened a new City Employees Wellness Center on July 10th. First estimates of savings $1,000,000 per year.
- Completed surveys of our 5 historic districts some having not been surveyed in 25 years.
- Will Open the BuckyDent/Kaplan University Baseball Academy in August 2010.
- In November, Delray Beach will host the first-ever New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox Fantasy Baseball Camp. There will also be a second camp during late February of 2011.
Near Future:
- Will become an early adopter of the new Palm Beach County Commission on Ethics, Inspector General and Lobbyist Registration.
- Currently working on a public/private partnership to bring a major tennis and golf academy and the U.S. Soccer Team to Delray Beach.
